Project SEARCH Initiative

Earlier this year, the CIL was invited to take part in the Project Search initiative, whereby several Supported Employment consumers are selected to join forces with a host business, namely UF/Shand’s College of Medicine and the Alachua County School Board, to provide internships. The goal of these internships is to teach them marketable skills so that, upon graduation in May, they are able to obtain meaningful/gainful employment in our community, ideally with Shands Hospital.

Over the course of the next school year, they will be interning in various departments throughout UF/Shand’s College of Medicine. CIL staff and partners provide the support, coaching, and encouragement needed for these individuals to take an opportunity and hopefully turn it into a long and fruitful career!

STAY COOL

Wear Appropriate Clothing: Choose lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.

Stay Cool Indoors: Stay in an air-conditioned place as much as possible. If your home does not have air conditioning, go to the shopping mall or public library—even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat. Call your local health department to see if there are any heat-relief shelters in your area.

Schedule Outdoor Activities Carefully: Try to limit your outdoor activity to when it’s coolest, like morning and evening hours. Rest often in shady areas so that your body has a chance to recover.

Pace Yourself: Cut down on exercise during the heat. If you’re not accustomed to working or exercising in a hot environment, start slowly and pick up the pace gradually. If exertion in the heat makes your heart pound and leaves you gasping for breath, STOP all activity. Get into a cool area or into the shade, and rest, especially if you become lightheaded, confused, weak, or faint.

Wear Sunscreen: Sunburn affects your body’s ability to cool down and can make you dehydrated. If you must go outdoors, protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and by putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher 30 minutes prior to going out. Continue to reapply it according to the package directions.

Tip: Look for sunscreens that say “broad spectrum” or “UVA/UVB protection” on their labels- these products work best.

STAY HYDRATED

Drink Plenty of Fluids: Drink more fluids, regardless of how active you are. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink.

STAY INFORMED

Check for Updates: Check your local news for extreme heat alerts and safety tips and to learn about any cooling shelters in your area.

Pathways to Employment: Project SEARCH in Alachua County

Link

Project SEARCH is a high school program that provides training and internship opportunities for neurodivergent individuals. This opportunity allows them to gain workplace experiences and skills needed for competitive employment and successful careers after graduation.

The University of Florida College of Medicine and UF Health Shands Hospital are partners with the Alachua County Public Schools, The Center For Independent Living of North Central Florida, Florida Vocational Rehabilitation, and The Agency For Persons With Disabilities to offer this workplace internship program.

Project SEARCH provides this tremendous opportunity for our community to support and celebrate individuals who are neurodivergent. Interns in this program report to UF Shands Hospital to learn job skills in the classroom, while participating in three non-paid work rotations throughout the year. Students also engage in progress meetings to determine their career goals and plan steps in achieving those goals. Intern site managers work with Project SEARCH instructors and job coach to support the success of each student.

Back to School Bash at North Central Florida YMCA

We are thrilled to share our incredible experience at the Back to School Bash hosted by the North Central Florida YMCA in Gainesville this past Saturday on August 5th. Our dedicated team member, Claudia, represented CIL and FAAST Program, helping to spread the word about this amazing service that provides Assistive Technology (AT) for both children and adults.

Claudia had an array of cutting-edge AT devices on display, each designed to empower children with disabilities to excel not only in their studies but also in their everyday lives. These tools are game-changers, helping to unlock new opportunities and pave the way for success!

A huge shoutout to North Central Florida YMCA for organizing this fantastic event and giving us the opportunity to connect with our incredible community. Let’s continue spreading the message of inclusivity, empowerment, and boundless possibilities!
